2009-2010 Influenza Information

This site is an excellent resource for regularly updated information regarding
H1N1 and seasonal influenza.
Current Office Experience (dated Jan 2010)
We have seen a large number of H1N1 cases in our office this past fall,
particulary in October.  Since then, the number of cases here and in NC as  a
whole, has dramatically decreased.  To be treated for H1N1, a patient must
present with symptoms consistent with H1N1 within 48 hours, otherwise,
treating the illness has no benefit, since symptoms last only 5 days with no
treatment.
By January, we expect to begin seeing regular seasonal flu activity, but as of
Jan 9, 2010, there has been little activity.

Our office is one of 95 sites in the state of NC which participates in the NC
Sentinel Site Network for influenza-like illness (ILI).  We send in weekly numbers
of patients seen with ILI and in return we receive weekly updated reports from
the NC Dept of Epidemiology which details flu activity in the state and by county.

ILI is defined by the CDC and state of NC as:
1.  Fever >100.5F
and either
2.  Sore throat (not caused by mono or strep or other identifiable cause), OR
3.  Cough
